Thankful For Luggage Wheels
Remember the days when luggage wheels were those tiny quarter sized affairs stuck on all four corners of the bottom of your suitcase? Remember that you only ever wheeled your luggage when you absolutely couldn't carry it any farther? Remember that this was because those wheels seemed to point in every direction and made it harder to pull along than a large, rebellious dog on a leash (and that the suitcase would keep falling over?)
Fortunately those days are well behind us. Luggage wheels have evolved and improved dramatically over the last decade or two. These days rolling luggage is the norm, and the wheels have been moved to one end of the suitcase on one side. Even better, pull-out handles have appeared so you don't have to pull on a strap or even the handle for lifting the suitcase.
Anyone who has done much traveling over the years can attest to the miracle that is wheeled luggage. The only time you ever have to lift your luggage anymore is to get it in and out of the house and car, and to lift it onto the conveyor belt at the airport! I really would be interested in looking into how many fewer problems people have with their backs now than they did back then.
Of course many people still have their old luggage that is not so roll-friendly. If this is the case for you and you plan on doing much traveling, it's high time you went in for some rolling luggage. On the other hand, if the suitcase is still in good condition, you can add wheels to it on your own! It's not too hard.
One reason why wheeled luggage is so important today is the cost to travelers for extra luggage. Most airlines are trying to keep down the weight on their flights in order to save on fuel expenses. This is why they transfer the cost of shipping the check-on luggage to the customer.
Now everyone wants to travel lighter. The best way to do this is to only take your carryon luggage and avoid checking any on. This also makes getting out of the airport upon arrival much quicker. For this reason, luggage wheels are more important than ever. Now that people are choosing to have their luggage with them everywhere they go, it is easier for them to do it than if they had to carry it around. Even backpacks and computer bags are now made with wheels for easy travel!
I personally am thankful for luggage wheels and for all the back problems that I don't have because of them. Really, I don't know how people did it in the old days, especially if they were traveling alone. To the inventor of rolling luggage, I say thank you!!
